Response Choice Board
<
>
For your last reading activity of the week, I would like you to read through the Time Magazine, grade 5 edition that I have linked below. There are some awesome articles in it for you to read. Once you are done reading, you will pick a minimum 3 responses to do that correlate to each of the articles. The response choice board is found on the next tab. I would like one of your choices to be choice 1, choice 2, or choice 3. Just because you only have to do 3 responses, doesn't mean that you can't do more! I would be SO impressed if you did all of them :) |
Choice 1 - ANIMALS Wildlife Lessons Art Activity - After you read "Wildlife Lessons," I want you to reflect on what is special about Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Then, design and create a brochure for kids who are visiting the park. The brochure can list activities for visitors, things they might see, and facts about elephants. Remember, brochures are bright, fun, and inviting. Feel free to add pictures and colors that will grab people's attention. |
Choice 2 - ENVIRONMENT Turning the Tide Experiment: The deeper you go in the ocean, the greater the pressure. This pressure is dangerous for humans, so they must wear special equipment, like the diver in the picture on page 6. There is an experiment that you can do to help you learn more about pressure. Use the directions below to complete it: Gather the following materials: a liter bottle with cap, clay/Play-Doh, and a plastic straw. To start, clean the bottle. Next, cut a two-inch piece off the straw and plug one end of it with clay. Put a ring of clay around the other end, leaving the hole open. This will model your “diver.” Fill the bottle three-quarters of the way with water. Place your diver in the bottle and close the cap. Squeeze the bottle and watch what happens to the diver! (In the experiment, as you apply pressure to the bottle, you apply pressure to the air bubble in the straw, reducing its size. As the size reduces, the straw begins to sink. Once you release the pressure of the bottle, the diver will float back to the top.) |
Choice 3 - KID CENTRAL Kid Heroes for the Planet Business Plan - Think about something you'd like to see change regarding the environment. Your task is to think of a product you could create and sell to raise awareness and donations, just like Bria. Creating a design requires more than just a great idea: It also requires math. After you design and draw a prototype (example of your product), research the cost of the materials needed to make it. Once you've calculated the total cost of making the product, figure out how much you should sell your product for and where the you would donate the money to. |
Choice 4 - U.S. Waste Not Think - what makes this story important? Why do you think the author chose to write it? After reading this story, are you more concerned about food waste? Why or why not? |
Choice 5 - TECHNOLOGY Charging Ahead Compare and Contrast - Name one positive, and one negative to switching over to electric school busses. Do you think that it is a good idea to switch, given both the positive and the negative that you listed? Why? |
Choice 6 - WORLD Life on the Line Define each of the following: DMZ - Democracy - Dictatorship |
Choice 7 - CAREERS Diving In Question: Which of the pictures that Daniel Botelho took is your favourite? Why is that particular picture your favourite? Which of the marine animals in his pictures would you like to swim with? Why did you choose that animal? |
Choice 8 - TIME OFF Waving Hello Research - Research Adélie penguins in Antarctica, and report three interesting and unique facts about their lifestyles. |
