This week, we will finish the short novel about Sadako. Once you are finished, you will complete a few short questions, and as a wrap up, you can look at my time in Hiroshima at the memorial for the victims of the atom bomb. There is even a paper crane that was left in your honour! Make sure to check those pictures out. Lastly, you can choose to make a paper crane. Make sure to send a picture of me with your paper crane when you are done, and I can post it to the gallery tab on here.

Which disease does Sadako suffer from? What is the nickname for this disease in Japan?
Who is Kenji? Why was he in the hospital?
What animal did Sadako compare herself to at the beginning of the chapter titled “Hundreds of Wishes”? Why did she compare herself to that animal?
What are 3 traditions that Sadako’s family did to honor, O Bon, the biggest holiday of the year?
How did Sadako’s classmates honour her after she died?

In January of 2017, I was lucky enough to visit Hiroshima, and the memorial for those people affected by the bomb. Just outside the memorial was a memorial dedicated to Sadako. Below are some pictures that I took while I was there.
The memorial statue, with Sadako standing at the top.
Although you weren't in my class at the time, most of you were in General Stewart School. This paper got folded into a paper crane and left among millions of other ones at the memorial as a symbol of peace. Now you know that there was a crane left in your honour!
These cranes were some of the ones that Sadako folder herself. They were in a museum.

Me sitting on a park bench, folding paper cranes to leave at the memorial.
Here I am, leaving the cranes inside a shelter at the memorial.
This building was at the epicenter (right in the middle) of where the bomb dropped. The building was left up for education and memorial purposes.

If you would like to give it a try, I will post a video of how to make a paper crane below. It is a little bit tricky, so you need to be patient and realize that the first one may not work out perfectly. You can also look up other videos or pictures to help you out. Send me pictures once you are done, and I will post them on this link below the video.
