If you are a grade 5 student who has had me (Miss Gerritsen) as a teacher, you know how much I love elaborative detail! This week's main writing assignment is to REALLY elaborate what Easter morning is like in your family by using the five senses!
Step yourself through the instructions by clicking on the step by step tabs before you start writing. Make sure to take all of the useful tips throughout this "virtual" writing lesson and apply them to your own writing!

(Remember, you can find the entire assignment attached as a word document at the bottom of this page!)
Excellent! Now I would like you to write a descriptive paragraph detailing everything that you see, smell, hear, taste, and feel on Easter morning. Here are a few tips to consider before and while you are writing:
- Use descriptive adjectives! They make your writing much more interesting. Below is a chart with some good adjectives for each of the 5 senses.
Smell |
Hear |
Taste |
Touch |
See |
Fresh Delicious Sweet Fragrant Decadent |
Crackling Crunching Sizzling Munching Chewing Chomping Noisy Chattering |
Sweet Scrumptious Delicious Delectable Tasty Mouth-watering Yummy Sugary |
Smooth Soft Sticky Thick Heavy Light Silky Bumpy Gooey |
Adorable Speckled Shiny Bright Delightful Beautiful |
2. Don’t start every sentence with the same word or words – vary the sentence starters!
3. As always, be creative, and have fun!

Here are two examples of a descriptive paragraph of what someone might see, smell, hear, taste, and feel on Christmas (I chose Christmas and not Easter because I don’t want to do your job for you!)
Here is a "just okay" paragraph about Christmas Morning: |
On Christmas morning I woke up to the smell of pancakes. I saw that the Santa left some presents for my siblings and I to find. I heard the crackle of the fire. I felt the smooth wrapping paper on my gift. I was so excited to open it. After opening presents, we ate our pancakes, and they tasted delicious! (Do you see how most of the sentences start with “I,” and there weren’t very many descriptive adjectives?) |
Here is a MUCH better version of the paragraph above, using the tips from step 2 |
It was a frosty winter morning, and I woke up with joy in my heart as I realized it was Christmas! The decadent smell of fluffy pancakes wafted through the air. Joyously, I ran down the stairs to share my excitement with my loving family. The glowing fire crackled, and a jolt of anticipation coursed through my veins as I laid eyes upon the mass of beautiful presents that Santa left for me. I ran my fingers across the silky paper and neat bows. Together, we laughed and smiled as we took turns tearing open our gifts. Afterward, we sat down at our large oak table to devour some mouth-watering pancakes. (Ahh... much better!) |
Now...Let’s get writing!
Either in your notebook, on a word document, or on the printed attached word document found below, I’d like you to write a descriptive paragraph of what you see, smell, hear, taste, and feel on Easter morning.

This week, I would also like everyone to write a journal entry using one of the two prompts below. If you simply can't choose which one to write about, by all means feel free to write them both! As always, be creative!
1. Write a suspenseful story about a meeting between the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy that went horribly wrong.
2. Write a story that includes each of the following characters:
