I think we can all agree that animals are SUPER awesome! Not only can they make great pets, but they are incredible to watch in their habitats, and they are all so unique. From the long neck that giraffes have to reach leaves high up in the trees, to the way bears hibernate through winter, animals are SUPER cool! Some of my favourite animal stories are those stories in which animals become heroes. This week, you are going to read some stories about animal heroes, and summarize what you have read. There won't be a whole lot of comprehension questions this week, because I just want you to enjoy the stories!
To start with, read the story called "True Stories of Animal Heroes" on Epic Books, then once you are done reading it, move on to the summarizing tab to complete your short response.

For each of the nine animal heroes that are written about in the book, complete a one sentence summary using the sentence prompt:
___________________ is a ______________________ who is a hero because ___________________________.
(for example - Lexi is a golden retriever dog who is a hero because she is just so darn cute!)
Please write one summary sentence for each animal hero you have read about in the book.

If you are enjoying reading about animal heroes, there are many more stories to be found online! I will link a few of the websites below:

As a fun creative wrap-up activity, you are going to make an award for an animal of your choice! It could be one that you read about, or it could be an animal that is in your life now or was in your life in the past. This is your chance to get creative! I will put some templates up for you to use for inspiration.
This award can be for anything. It can be for a heroic act they have done, it can be for being adorable, it can be for being the world's best destroyer of carpets (*cough, Lexi, cough*).
This can be done in two ways:
a) You can find an editable template online and fill it out on there (there are many if you just search 'award' or 'certificate' on google)
b) You can get a plain white piece of paper and create and decorate your award by hand.
Whichever option you choose, please include the following on your award:
- The name of the animal that is receiving the award
- The reason that they are receiving the award
- A picture of the animal receiving the award
- The date the award was published
- Your name (because you are giving this award to the animal)
- Anything extra that you'd like to include - a border, a ribbon or fancy decorative stamp, fancy fonts, etc.
