Sequencing Activity

Whenever we read or write different things, our brain likes to organize things in the order it happened. When you tell someone about a book you read, you usually tell them in the order that things happened. When you are writing a story, or even just a set of instructions, you also usually do it in sequence, or in order things happen in. It would be pretty tricky to make a tasty cake if you said to put it in the oven before putting the eggs in!
Your task this week will be to make a foldable using the picture instructions below, then choose something that interests you and make instructions on how to do that. Start with the foldable though:
Your task this week will be to make a foldable using the picture instructions below, then choose something that interests you and make instructions on how to do that. Start with the foldable though:
Step 1: Hot Dog fold your piece of paper
Step 4: Undo all of the folds (except the first one)

Step 2: Hamburger fold that it in half
Step 5: snip the top layer along the folds
|
Step 3: One more hamburger fold in half
Step 6: tape the backside to the bottom of a second piece of paper, so that it looks like this.

Now, I want you to choose something that you can give four steps of instructions for. For the example I used, I did instructions for baking a cake. You can choose anything you want though - how to ski, how to build a spaceship with lego, how to annoy your little sibling. Choose something that interests you!
Once you have your idea, I want you to brainstorm the four steps it would take to complete that task, using the sequencing words: First, next, then, and last. My example is as follows:
How to bake a cake:
First - get a good recipe and gather all of your ingredients.
Next - Follow all of the directions on your recipe, and bake according to instructions.
Then - Either make or buy your favourite type of icing and ice your cake.
Last - Eat your scrumptious cake!
Once you have an idea along with your list of instructions, put those instructions into your foldable like I did in mine... The top flaps will say "first," "next," "then," and "last." When you lift the flaps, you can write the instructions and illustrate that particular step. Look to mine for a visual example:
