Scattergories Story
1. First, choose a letter! It can be the letter of your first name, your favourite letter, a letter that your sibling gives you – you choose! I would advise staying away from the tricky letters though (mainly, letter X).
2. Okay… got one? Great! Now, I want you to brainstorm three people, three places, three animals (or mythical creatures), and three things, all that start with that letter. You can use the template below to help you (or just scribble your ideas down on a scrap piece of paper).

3. Good job. Next, I want you to pick one word from each category. For example, if I brainstormed using the letter “K,” I could maybe choose Katy Perry, Kansas, Kitten, and a Keychain.
Picked your favourite? Now go to the next tab for your next set of directions…
Alright, with the four words you chose, you are going to write a story! Make sure, like all stories, it has a plot line – a beginning, a problem, and a solution. If you’d like to, you can use some of the pieces of an effective narrative story (entertaining beginning, elaborative detail, suspense, main event, and extended ending). I know we haven’t covered the last two parts of the story, so just make sure to really extend your ideas, use your powerful adjectives, and don’t make “shopping lists.” Have fun and be creative with your story. I look forward to reading them all!
Let's be real... you guys are curious about how the story with Katy Perry in Kansas with a kitten and a keychain turned out. Well lucky for you, I was curious as well, so I decided to write my own Scattergories Story - enjoy!
** Short note: This story went much longer than anticipated once I started writing. Your story DEFINITELY does not need to be this long! I get a bit carried away sometimes!

The birds chirped happy songs through the open window of Katy Perry’s bedroom. The light breeze caused the curtains to dance, and the bright rays of the sun shone through. Yawning, Katy stretched her arms before crawling out of bed. As she ruffled through her dresser, her hand hit something cool and hard. A confused look came over her face as she pulled out a very old DVD copy of her favourite childhood movie – the Wizard of Oz. “Interesting,” Katy thought to herself, dusting off the old movie. “Today seems as good a day as any to watch this old classic!” she said to her kitten named Kitty who was lounging on her bed. Katy took the movie downstairs, and placed the disc into the DVD machine.
As soon as the movie started playing, Katy got up and went to put coffee on in the kitchen. She had seen this movie dozens of times, so it was okay if she missed the first bit. The tornado always frightened her anyways. It was while she was in the sunny kitchen that Katy heard a blast of thunder (which was strange seeing that it was such a sunny morning), followed by her kitten make a screeching sound. Her heart thumping wildly in her chest, Katy raced back into the living room. At first, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. “Kitty?” She called out. She heard a meow in response to her call, coming from the TV set. Frantically, Katy looked behind and around the television for any signs of her cat. It was when she looked directly in the screen that she realized, with a sinking feeling in her stomach that Kitty had been sucked right into the movie!
Katy had nearly no time to panic, however! Another loud booming sound rattled the windows of her house, and Katy was knocked straight to the ground. The world spun around her, and the world went dark.
Rubbing her temples, Katy stood up and gained her bearings. She was not in Los Angeles anymore, that was for sure. In the distance, Katy heard a girl’s voice singing. She listened carefully, and soon realized that the song was “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Suddenly, it hit her like a ton of bricks. SHE WAS IN THE MOVIE! Looking around, she saw the flat fields of Kansas surrounded her. As her mind cleared, she came to two stark realizations. First, she had to find her kitten. Second, she had to get out of the movie and away from Kansas before the tornado hits. Time was running out!
Without further hesitation, Katy sent on her search for her kitten. She must be so scared, Katy thought to herself as she set on her way to the old Kansas farmhouse that was home to the fictional Dorothy. Hiding, behind an old fence, Katy made a note that Dorothy was done her classic song. That only meant one thing – the tornado was coming soon, and she had no idea how to get home! To her relief, she heard a faint purring sound behind her. Katy’s heart fluttered as she saw Kitty behind her, nudging her head into the palm of her hand. “Hey there bud,” Katy whispered as she scooped up the kitten and gently placed her in her pocket. Now she just had the problem of how on earth to get home.
Looking to the north, Katy noticed an ominous dark funnel cloud forming. She was running out of time! She scurried behind the farmhouse, knowing that if she does nothing, she will be sucked into the tornado and swept off to Oz. From there, who knows how on earth she would get back home to Los Angeles? There were only one pair of ruby slippers after all, and Dorothy needed those! Glancing down, Katy saw a hidden object glistening in the dirt. Curiously, she bent over to pick up a glimmering keychain with the city skyline of Los Angeles on it, and the words “there’s no place like home” engraved on the back. Kitty meowed from her pocket and swatted at the keychain. Katy looked at it inquisitively and rubbed it between her fingers. She felt the keychain warm up, along with a buzzing vibration pulse through her body. “This is our key to get home!” Katy realized. She rubbed the keychain between her fingers and closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she was still in Kansas, and the tornado was still brewing. Disappointment flooded her, but she had one last idea. Loudly, Katy rubbed her fingers over the keychain and said “there’s no place like home” loudly three times. The vibrations got more intense, and Katy felt like she was falling into an endless pit.
When the spinning and falling sensations were finally over, Katy once again rubbed her temples, and stood up. Kitty crawled out from her pocket and curled right up on the couch, fast asleep. It was an exhausting day for her! Katy looked at her TV screen to see Dorothy flying through the air in her house – off on her way to Oz! They escaped just in time. She heard the “ding” of the coffee pot go off, and smiled to herself. That was enough adventure for one morning! She grabbed a cup of coffee, and enjoyed the rest of her favourite movie, with kitty snoozing beside her.
